The Joliet Junior Woman’s Club received awards at the General Federation of Women’s Club Annual Convention in Memphis, Tennessee this June. JJWC is part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, an international organization that promotes volunteerism and community service.
JJWC was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award for Creativity in Women’s History and Resource Center for creating a “GFWC Victorian Elegance” table at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Tablescapes Event in Joliet. This project was coordinated by Historian Chairwoman, Amy Vicioso, along with members from the Plainfield, Elgin, Lombard, and Princeton Junior Woman’s Clubs. Ms. Vicioso was also recognized as the GFWC-Illinois LEADS Representative at the Convention. The LEADS program identifies GFWC members who have the “potential and the desire to assume leadership positions in GFWC beyond their club.” Ms. Vicioso also currently serves as the GFWC-Illinois District 11 Director of Junior Clubs.
JJWC also received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Creativity in Fundraising and Development for “Howl at the Moon: Cuisine in the Corn for a Cause,” which took place in September. The fundraiser was led by Fundraising Chairwoman, Lauren McFarland. The event raised over $17,000 with funds donated to local charities supporting women and children.
JJWC member Karyn McCarthy was honored as Outstanding Director of Junior Clubs (Category 1) for her leadership as GFWC-Illinois Director of Junior Clubs. Long-time member and GFWC International Secretary, Deb Strahanoski, played an active role in convention business.
Many congratulations to those receiving special recognition and to all of our club members for efforts to help others!
